For many networks, the i-Sense is plug and play. Networks with DHCP will assign it a network configuration that will
allow it to communicate immediately with i-Grid. If your i-Sense does not communicate immediately, there could be a
number of reasons. These include:
No DHCP
A Proxy server
Firewall rules
Ethernet cabling issues
Note that before you can view i-Sense data on i-Grid you must register your i-Sense. If you need to do this, please
login to your account on i-Grid and register your monitor.
Configuring for Ethernet
At a high-level you will be using a laptop computer to simulate an i-Sense. The steps you will be using are:
Record the current settings on your laptop so they can be reinstated
Discover important local network configuration
Apply settings to your laptop and test
Configure your i-Sense
Reinstate the settings to your laptop
Note that if you do not understand the terminology discussed, or you do not know how to perform any steps
described, or you do not know the settings your i-Sense should be using you will need the help of your IT
department.
1. Record the current settings on your laptop so they can be reinstated
Record your laptop's current network settings for your Ethernet port. You will need these to return your
laptop to its current state.
Laptop Settings
Does your laptop use DHCP?
⬜ Yes⬜ No
Laptop Static IP Address:
_________________________
Laptop Subnet:
_________________________
Laptop Gateway IP Address:
_________________________
Laptop Primary DNS Server:
_________________________
Laptop Secondary DNS Server:
_________________________
2. Discover important local network configuration
Record the settings of your local network.
If you do not know any of these, your local IT department should be able to help.
Does your local network use a DHCP server?
⬜ Yes⬜ No
Fill out the next 5 fields only if your LAN does not use DHCP
Expected Static IP Address:
_________________________
Expected Subnet:
_________________________
Expected Gateway IP Address:
_________________________
Expected Primary DNS Server:
_________________________
Expected Secondary DNS Server:

Does your network use a Proxy server?
⬜ Yes⬜ No
Fill out the next 4 fields only if your LAN does use a Proxy server
Proxy server IP address:

Does your network use a Firewall?
⬜ Yes⬜ No
Communication between your i-Sense and the i-Grid network will not work until your firewall
has the correct rules in place. If your local network uses a firewall, please tell your IT
department to open:
Model
URL
IP Address
Port
Allen-Bradley

3. Apply settings to your laptop and test
In this step you will enter settings for your i-Sense into this form and adjust until you find the right
settings.
Note that entering settings below will fill out a form further down you can use to transfer the settings to
your
i-Sense.
Please follow these steps exactly:
If you have not recorded your laptop's current network settings (step 1), please do so now.
Temporarily disable your laptop's firewall.
Turn off Wi-Fi.
From previous steps, enter the settings you believe are correct for your i-Sense below.
Is your laptop using DHCP?
Is your laptop using a Proxy Server?
Configure the Ethernet network settings on your laptop to the settings above.
Plug the Ethernet cable dedicated to the i-Sense unit into your laptop.
It is important that you use the same cable that will be plugged into the i-Sense.
On your laptop, launch a browser. Any of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, or Safari are acceptable.
When you go there, you should see a page like this:
You will need to adjust either the laptop settings or the firewall settings until you can reach the page
above. Be sure the adjust the form above also since this will also configure the simulated i-Sense
Management Console below. You may need the assistance of your IT department for this step.
If you are having problems with configuration you should:
Check that the settings you intend are the ones you entered into the laptop.
If your facility uses a firewall, have your IT department check that traffic for www.igrid.com
is
reaching the firewall and successfully passing through.
If your facility uses a proxy server, have your IT department check that it is handling
www.igrid.com traffic correctly.
If your facility does not use DHCP, have your IT department check there is no IP address
collision.
4. Configure your i-Sense
Transfer the settings to the i-Sense
Configure your laptop to communicate with your i-Sense as described in the i-Sense User Manual.
Directly connect the laptop to the i-Sense using instructions described in the i-Sense User Manual.
Enter the values shown below into the Management Console. Note that these values are populated while
filling out the form above.
Directly below the settings is a button that will print out just the settings.
You can print out these settings for your records.
Note: The settings below are not editable. Editing the fields in section 3 will update the settings below.
Settings to be transferred to the i-Sense Management Console

IP address:
Subnet mask:
Default Gateway:

Laptop Primary DNS Server:
Laptop Secondary DNS Server:

Host Name or IP:

Port:

Username:

Password:
When you are finished be sure to restart the Ethernet using the button at the bottom of the
Management Console.
5. Reinstate the settings to your laptop
From the settings you wrote down in step 1, return your laptop to its original configuration.
Turn on Wi-Fi if you turned it off.
Turn on your software firewall if you turned it off.
Intermittent communication failures
Intermittent communication failures are usually signs of problems with your network. These could be due to many
network factors including:
Faulty Ethernet cables
Faulty Ethernet devices
Significant electrical noise
IP address collision (static IP addresses only)
You should enlist your IT department to help diagnose this issue.
Other diagnostic methods
One more idea to help with Ethernet communication failures:
If the i-Sense is on your factory network and you have a separate office network, attach the i-Sense to the
office network. This technique can be especially effective if your office network has fewer restrictions than
your factory network. If your i-Sense works without issue on your office network, then you know you have an
issue with your factory network. If possible, you can keep the i-Sense on your office network.
